Several years later when we were both adults, we ran into each other on the street one day. It turned out that after joining the army he had joined the Party, been promoted to cadre-rank and had been recommended to study in some college or other. For some reason he seemed more dainty than ever, and his aura of having been beautified from head to toe left a very bad impression on me. Faced with an old classmate like this, I suddenly felt I had been wronged. Why wouldn`t Dad give me even this kind of chance to differentiate between people?More contact with people would have given me the ability to distinguish between them. Using the word complex to stop me thinking, only increased my feeling that everything was a mystery to me. At the time I was also sixteen.
As I thought, I unconsciously pedalled faster.
I arrived at the editorial department offices. They were in an old-style courtyard of the kind commonly found in northern towns. This one was said to have been the residence of the concubine of a silk merchant. My office was in a side room on the west. Despite the fact that a crisis of living space now threatens two-thirds of all Chinese people,in a middle-sized town like ours, the crisis was still not very evident. The ten square metre office was occupied by only two people. Compared to those fearful editorial departments in large cities where a dozen or more people are crammed shoulder to shoulder into one room, and even the respected, white-haired senior editors have to climb onto their desks and pillow their heads with papers and magazines for their midday siesta, our office was obviously by far the superior.
Department Chief Old Ma had long been at his desk when I walked in. I called to him in greeting, but he didn`t even raise his head,and simply continued reading manuscripts. Old Ma was the other master of this western side room.
